This movie came out in 1999 at the same time as The Matrix. It was considered a rip-off of The Matrix and was pretty much ignored, which is a pity, because it's an excellent movie. I just discovered it and thoroughly enjoyed it.
In many ways it's a better movie than the Matrix. It may not have had anywhere near the budget but it has a much deeper plot.
Highly recommend it. Put it on your Netflix list and don't let ANYONE tell you any spoilers.

It's a good movie, but better than Matrix? Sorry, have to disagree with you there...

What I said was that "In some ways it's better than the Matrix". For that matter "Dark City", which came out in 1998 (a year before) is an better movie than the Matrix in many ways. If you haven't seen that one check it out since they just released the Director's Cut version:

The Matrix was visually stunning with a huge CG and stunt budget, but the plot was pretty simplistic and actually somewhat absurd. There was no real depth to the movie.
Matrix 2 and 3 were even worse. Except for the stunts, they were just moronic and unoriginal. I liked it better in matrix 1 where programs were automatons like the agents, but then we had programs that have feelings, and emotions, and even CHILDREN and were complaining about being oppressed. Didn't Tron already tread that path?
Not to mention Keanu Reeves has absolutely zero reach as an actor.
