New York Teacher Marla Gurecki-Haskins Charged For Oral Sex With Student

A Canandaigua, New York, special education teacher, Marla Gurecki-Haskins, was charged Monday in Canandaigua City Court for engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old male student and having inappropriate interactions of a sexual nature with other teen male students at Canandaigua Academy, where she teaches. The 37-year-old teacher turned herself in, pleaded not guilty to the the charges, and was released on her own recognizance. Marla Gurecki-Haskins was arrested and charged after an investigation into allegations that surfaced in April that she had performed oral sex on a 17-year-old student in her classroom during school hours at Canandaigua Academy.
Charges against Marla Gurecki-Haskins do not end with the official misconduct charge, a misdemeanor, associated with the oral sex allegations. Gurecki-Haskins is also charged with first-degree disseminating indecent material to minors and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Court documents reveal that it is alleged that the special education teacher employed a cell phone to “invite or induce” a 16-year-old student to have sex (which prompted the felony dissemination charge) and that she allegedly communicated via cell phone, text messages, and e-mails encouraging a sexual relationship with two other 16-year-old students (prompting two misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of child).
All of the incidents allegedly occurred in April.
Investigators have perused nearly 2,500 pages of e-mail and text messages to get evidence against Gurecki-Haskins. Canandaigua Police Chief Jon Welch told the Messenger Post that the investigation was continuing and further charges against Gurecki-Haskins could be forthcoming.
Gurecki-Haskins refused to talk to the police after her arrest.
Welch would not disclose whether or not the alleged victims were students in Marla Gurecki-Haskins’ special education classes.
Gurecki-Haskins, a teacher in the district since 1995, has been on administrative leave since April 13, the day that the school district was apprised that a potential sexual relationship existed between the teacher and a male student and notified police of the allegations. She is due back in court on June 11.
