I first heard this on break.com. Sucks the guy got fired, he was just doing what he was told to do.

EXACTLY. They apologize and fire the guy when it's AOL'S POLICY to have them do this. TRUST ME.
That's EXACTLY how it is. I had a client - an 80 year woman who's fairly mild mannered - and they had her nearly in tears on the phone. The guy refused to cancel her. I was listening in the other room while I was working on her PC and I finally took the phone from her and reamed the guy a new one.
I can assure you these people are encouraged to do this. It happens all the time. Usually what they'll do is just refuse to cancel the account and give you 1 month for free to "think it over" and in 1 month you have to go through it all again on the phone with them.

I have had them (AOL) offer to put clients on standby for 4.95 a month instead of canceling thier account. Also it never fails once you get them to cancel the acount it takes them 3 months to stop billing and drafting your credit card or bank acount and you have to get them to refund the transaction ever month for at least 3 months before its over.

That's messed up. If you had auto payment via your bank, you can always have your bank stop payment.

Yah, it's total BS that the guy got fired for doing what AOL makes them do. I called them one time to cancel an account after like 6 years of using it and they wanted to know if I had any friends that wanted to take over the account, blah blah blah. They even asked if I had a DOG that wanted it.. Main reason I will never ever deal with them again. At least not intentionally.

I had the same problem. It took me like 35 minutes to cancel my aol, after i already tried once and they gave me the free month. Then they kept calling and calling, like twice a week for three weeks. They really need to change their company policy...

AOL just needs to shrivel up and die. Their internet 'service' and customer support have been horrendous from day one.

When I had to cancel my AOL subscription, we just told them that the family computer died, and we didn't need it anymore. Now that was partially a lie. The family computer did die, but we didn't tell them we had two more in the house. And that we got a local internet service for like $10 a month. The good ol' days of dialup. DSL rules.

From The Devil's Dictionary:
http://sedition.com/ddx/w/328.html
AOL
1. an ISP which is chiefly useful for losing tremendous amounts of data and denying even the most basic connections while charging the most premium of rates; proof that gross incompetence and popularity are not mutually exclusive.
2. a missed keystroke, a typo of SOL.

LOL! I can't tell you how many client's systems I've worked on that were infested with spyware that had AOL Spyware Protection installed. It's a f@cking joke.
