My DSL modem says you're wrong.

I'm pissed at people who call nasal tissues, kleenex... but that's just me

I had someone call the store the other day asking if we hook up "ROOTERS", I said no you'll need to call "ROTO ROOTER" for that.

Some terms I have heard some customers use:
sloppy drive = floppy drive
pendulum processor = pentium processor
rooter = router
gigaflop of RAM = gig of RAM
modem or modium = CPU or computer tower

What about the difference between master and slave? Now it's called primary and secondary.

i have to add a couple.

hard drive= the tower
memory= hard drive

Most "residential gateways" can function as a router also. Besides as any smart IT person knows, you never trust what your users tell you about hardware b/c they ususally don't have any idea what they are talking about. Quit bitching and go on with life...

i think right now the only res gate that can possibly function as a router is the linksys with an open source hackish style firmware

a router does alot more than you think it does

But my DSL modem still says it's a modem. And who am I to argue with a modem?

I have a Netgear RT311 and it will function as an router. If you telnet into it, there are even more features.

a static route is hardly routing
all that is, is forwarding

ROUTER <networking> /roo't*/ A device which forwards packets
between networks. The forwarding decision is based on
network layer information and routing tables constructed by routing protocols.

if it doesnt have the ability to route between subnets (more than 1 external and internal) with multiple address and use a routing protocol its not a router

How are Linksys and such devices not routers? By your definition it is a router. The device forwards packets between your ISP's network and your home network. And also how do you know there aren't any routing protocols being used?

In fact, look at the Linksys BEFSR4 manual ([url]ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befsr41V3_ug.pdf[/url]). On page #20 look at the information about choosing the version of the RIP which according to Cisco (http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc ... oc/rip.htm) is the most used routing protocol. By default the Linksys BEFSR4 is set to Dynamic routing since the majority of people don't know about routing protocols.

I think you're taking this stuff way too seriously and are all bent out of shape for no real reason. Is it really that big of a deal? It's interpretation of definitions.

your internal network and an isp....while in a sense is routing, its not really
its what you call NAT or network address translation
a router can route between 2 "real" networks or non private networks
while this is possible with a little finagaling you still havent accomplished what a router actually does
what is boils down to in a very simple way is

can your linksys or netgear build an internet? well thats what routers do for the most part
im just trying to correct people because people think their "res gate" is the same thing as a cisco, bay or cabletron and you and i both know thats not true
