there was no hacker attack, valve is inept.

A close friend of mine was a Producer for Vivendi (everybody in the NW got laid off a couple of weeks ago...he was one of them).

Back when the source code was reportedly pilfered, I asked him if this was some sort of publicity stunt or something. His eyes went wide, and he replied, "Oh, god, no. They called us in a total panic the moment they realized what was happening...and they NEVER call us."

Which is true. The relationship between Valve and Vivendi has been well documented...they don't like each other very much.
