Holy crap, Ned! It's headed right for us!!!!
Oh.... shit....
Damn thing turned right more than expected. It's bee-lining for us.
We're battened down real good. I've been through this drill often enough in Miami. Windows are all boarded up. Went to the lumber yard (REAL lumber yard not Lowes or Home Depot where all the other idiots went) at 8:30 am and picked up 7 sheets of 1/2" ply. No one was there except some contractors. I tried to pass the word around to people to get over there if they needed ply - they were planning to close at 2pm.
Being a former Miami native I always have a pretty well stocked hurricane supply kit so the only other thing I purchased was some water, and some plastic sheeting, and gassed up all the cars and two 5 gallon gas cans.
Started raining an hour ago but no appreciable wind yet - that'll change.
We're supposed to get nuked around 9pm. Damn thing's track right now looks like it will be to our west which is bad - tornados spawn on the right side of a hurricane's path.
They're predicting 60 - 75 MPH winds, which we can handle - heck we get 60 MPH gusts all the time during the rainy season. If it gets over 75 though, it'll get fun - I'll probably lose windows in the gazebo.
Thankfully the properly was recently cleared, and a storm last week took down a lot of dead limbs that we burned, the the potential amount of debris out there is at a minimum. Still I live on 20 acres and there's a lot of trees. Shit's gonna fly.
I also have a large wood pile that I lashed down and hopefully none of that will fly.
NO ONE was taking this very seriously until about 1pm when the hurricane turned sharply to the right. Our's in the only house anywhere nearby that has the windows boarded.
People around here aren't used to dealing with this - hurricanes very rarely come inland to central Florida. Fortunately I'm a former Miamian and I take hurricanes SERIOUSLY. This f@cker has our name on it.
Well I guess I'll find out how good internet access works on my Sprint PCS cellphone later when the phone and cable dies.
We brought the turkey in a half hour ago - it's in a cage in the master bathroom. She's all excited to be in the house.
I'll try and give you all a holler in the morning to let you know we're okay.

Heh... as long as the internet connection lasts.
This is going to be bad for a lot of people. This is the mobile home capital of Florida here.
I should get some good videos. For hurricane Andrew I was holed up in an office building with no windows.
Some shit's going to be flying past my back porch tonight

Damn
Stay safe, and maybe in your basement. If you have one.
I agree, hurricanes are nothing to be calm about. We've had our share here too. Several took out many trees (many huge ones), which in turn fell on homes, across roads and cars, killing several. One tree wrecked my geo tracker and took out a good part of my fence.
That, isn't good. Hope they all get to better and more stable areas.

No basements here in Florida - one of the few things I miss from up north.
We should be fine - the house is very solid and secure even though it's wood frame. The siding is Hardy board which are boards made of a resin and concrete composite.
Worse comes to worse we can bail to another house we own - we bought it as an inventment to rent as a seasonal rental. It's CBS block construction. I just don't like abandoning the ranch.

Well we got incredibly lucky. Right now Orlando's getting nuked. They've got 90+ MPH at the airport.
We're an hour's drive north of Orlando and so far we've just had some rain - not a whole lot - and some wind, but nothing over 40 MPH.
Practically the whole time we were in between two weather bands. We never lost power or cable TV.
It's almost over for us - as you can see from the radar we're almost out of it (storm is heading NE). Only a slight risk of tornados as the back edge of the storm passes.
We get Orlando TV stations here and from the sound of it they're takinga beating, but we're just fine.
Darcy: Cats all in spare bedroom (6 cats). Pet carriers are standing by just in case. Turkey is sound asleep in the bathroom.

Hmm, good thing you didn't have to order that bomb shelter bed.
I wonder if they express overnight it?
Anyways, glad everythings ok. Take care.
