I have an old ass colonial style house (built in 1903). The chimney (made of brick is starting to disinigrate from within. It is too narrow and has too many protruding bricks to sleeve it, so I would like to adapt a "direct vent" style exhaust to my new Gas hot water heater and not very new (old) gas furnace. I have looked it up online and it looks simple enough to do myself while the weather is nice out. Any safety issues I have to look for?

What size furnace and water heater ? (btu capacity) Are you sure you can't drop 5" double wall vent pipe down the brick chimney ? Depending upon the size of the furnace, you might need 6" pipe. I don't recommend venting an old furnace out the side of a house. You could have a 90% furnace installed but they are kinda expensive. There are water heaters available that vent out the side too.
