add a mod chip and then backup all of your legal copies for safekeeping. ;)

i don't think there will be a significant increase in performance/speed by changing the ide cable.

i'd suggest an xbox live kit and maybe a mod chip (but don't take my word for it) :)

i actually have 2 xbox's one is "modded" while the other is "stock" as i believe it's not possible to play online once you install a mod chip.

i also just got back from a trip to Asia and got me a bunch of xbox games at a very, very, very discounted price, if you know what i mean :)

I need to do some of That shopping. i got a bunch of games, but they are all them platinum hits, halo, midnight club 2 and lord of the rings. I got 12 games or there abouts though.....still, I need something cheap.

I added a fan. one of them blowers just to help things out a bit. i know the progonal xbox's had 2 fans, on on the nvidia chipset (now there isnt that fan) so Im just hedging my bet. I want to swap out the dvd drive for a slot load or something but I cant find a good site to help me with that...any good xbox sites out there for the moder?

And what mod chip to get?

"And what mod chip to get"

lemme ask some of the fellows on some of the xbox forums i visit.

as for myself, i had the chip installed when i brought it with me on my trip to the Asia (Philippines). not too sure as to exactly what kinda chip was installed or on how it looks inside as i simply left my xbox at the shop and got it after 3 days. it cost me around $60+ bucks (after peso to dollar conversion). i'd say it's worth it as the games sold for around 2 bucks each.

[edit]

there are obviously a bunch of mod chips out there and you can get a bunch of results by doing a simple search online. but almost everyone on forums that i frequent are pointing me out to the enigmah/enigma mod chip.

I'd add one of those modchips that dont need to be soldered. They 'rest' on some of the mount points for the xbox mb and the contacts touch what needs to be touched. That way you can remove it if you want to play xbox live!.

here's a good site of mod stuff to do, how to put in a mod chip, where to buy one, etc.

Manical1 gave ya a link to the xecuter2pro - which can come with pogo pins instead of soldering, or you can check out their Matrix mod chip

Image

See the hole in the lower left side of the chip? That will go on top of an existing XBOX MB screw - just unscrew the screw they tell you too, put the matrix in it's place, and screw it back in. The pogo pins will make contact with the traces on the mobo, and you wont need to solder it at all.

From what I've heard, soldering modchips onto the xbox is a pain in the ass, and requires the skills of a very proficient circuit-level solderer. (Thats what I've heard & read). Though I consider myself a proficient solderer, I wouldn't try soldering buggers onto SMD and PCB traces heheh.

Only downfall about the pogo-pin "solderless" mod chips is it depends on your revision of the xbox - not all versions can use it as MS changes the MB layout to stop this easy mods. Good luck though, let us know how it goes. How about a PCA article on modding your xbox, while your at it?

I added an X2 Lite modchip to my box and it has been working great. It was not hard to install. The hardest part is soldering the wire on the D0 connection. I added a 45GB 7200 RMP HD so I can just dump stuff to the HD and not mess around with discs. I use XBMP to play media on the TV.

One thing that I just started having a problem with is the DVD drive in the xbox. It suddenly started not reading discs. I haven't been moving the xbox around so it should not be anything mechanical. I can hear it spin and seek but it can not read any discs. I tore it apart and cleaned the lens but that was not the problem. I guess I will swap drives with my other xbox and see what happens. Does anybody know where one could obtain a repacement drive for an xbox?
