Computer caught fire!!!!

Post by marscheese »

Yup, I was in my room when it happened, thank god I was awake...or else, at the very least, my entire computer could have burned down. Here's a picture of it:

My motherboard is an Epox 8KHA+...my dad (a very skilled electrical engineer says he's 100% sure that the fire was caused by an IC on the motherboard). I was shocked. I don't overclock and my case wasn't dusty or anything like that, I guess the thing was just faulty. I've been running the thing flawlessly (I do run in 24/7) for about 5 or 6 months now.

I'm just glad I cought it early.

You guys ever hear of this sort of thing happening?

oh yeah, here's EPoX's response:

"Sorry for the situation and the damage to the board. However after reviewing your details and the location of the damage it appears a non EPoX brand USB port adapter (ATX front panel USB ports) was attached to the USB header. This explains the damage to the surrounding circuitry as the VCC and grounds were signals from the ATX case's front panel connector were reversed and not EPoX compliant. This type of installation is not supported by our warranty.

However we are willing to provide you a replacement EP-8KHA+ for $72 (this includes shipping). "

I have to agree with Epox that there was some kind of short circuit. That's the only way you'd see that kind of damage.

well, here's my dad's response to the above response from Epox:

Thank You for attempting to remotely identify the problem I experienced with this board.

However, please note that the attached USB cable did not have Vcc and ground reversed. It was installed properly and tested with my digital camera on both front ports.

In any case, the point is mute due to the fact that except for my initial testing, these front ports were never used. And ask any Electrical Engineer (I am One) that as long as the USB extension cable is not shorted, Even if Vcc and ground were reversed, no damage to the board would (should) occur.

Please note that the purpose of my initial writing was not to get Epox to replace this board ( I no longer trust EP-8KHA+ Board, as there appears to be a design or component select flaw), my purpose was rather to notify Epox of a potential problem with this family of board.

I am somewhat concerned about the quick pass of blame on this matter, a true evaluation of the source of the problem could not possibly be performed without inspection of the damaged board. (I did offer to send it to Epox). I must admit, I find Epox's elevation procedure on this matter very disturbing.

Hopefully, Epox is keeping track of the history of this board, as human lives are at risk!

Does your room stink now? doesent look like it burned enuff to stink the room permantaly. I do know of a kid that shorted a fully charged 1 farad capasitor in his car... lets just say the only thing that will make it not smell is to burn it. the capasitor had a monitor top on it, which absorbed most of the energy

Okay then...... Looks like I will not be running my main machine unattended anymore. Plus maybe it is time for a fire extinguisher in the room. Thank God you were there when it happened.

Sounds like Epox is trying to pull an excuse out of thier ass. I would think to do that type of damage you need more than 5 volts! :(

3 volts from a couple of pen cell batteries will do that much damage.

I'm just saying that Epox is assuming there was a dead short and I have to agree. That's what it takes to cause a fire like that. It's possible a chip shorted internally and it wasn't a physical short, but nonetheless SOMETHING shorted a powersupply bus out.
