Porn did help the net explode.

Porn is a business just like anything else as the article shows.

Internet porn brings in $1 billion to $2 billion of the estimated $10 billion to $14 billion U.S. consumers spend annually on hard-core smut, The New York Times reported in May 2001. That includes hotel, cable and satellite pay-per-view, movie cassettes, DVDs, phone sex, adult toys and explicit magazines.

That makes the porn industry a bigger moneymaker than the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball combined.

And it creates a blue-chip list of corporations making millions selling or delivering porn movies.

Two years ago, 40 percent of all hotel rooms offered pay-per-view porn, which made $190 million a year, The Times reported. That topped profits from mini-bars.

But two problems are eating into Internet porn profits: free porn and the need to get more customers.

At the trade show, one company paid local strippers to hand out CD-roms holding 4,000 downloadable dirty pictures.

"The free stuff is a problem," says Jay Kopita, the 33-year-old communications director at .com, a Web site that serves as a Yellow Pages for porn webmasters. Part of his job is to report cyber porn news and trends.

"What you're seeing now a lot is people having trouble finding ways to make money," says Kopita.

In this business it takes 400 hits on a pay-for-porn Web site to get one paying customer. That's why porn sellers need new customers in significant millions to get excited.

and later on:

"The Germans are into fetishes," he begins. "Latex is big. They like master/servant and bondage. No implants. Women with hair under their arms and on their legs is OK. If the woman gets slapped, OK, but no violence." Also, he adds, German men buy lots of porn.
