Stealth P2P network hides inside Kazaa

Apprently, There is a company that runs Kazaa's ad software that will be "turning on" a certian part of the software that allows any computer using the Kazaa software to have their own software do many different things using your hard drive space and bandwidth. Including becoming a second File-sharing software that they can use for their own purposes and distributed computing. While they mentioned that there would be rewards for letting the software run, the rewards are not major things when you consider you are allowing a company to do whatever they wish with your computer. (which they claim will be a special pop-up window letting you know what is about to run, but according to the Terms of Use when you installed Kazaa, you are already granting them permission anyway.)

Kazza is know to have spyware so this isn't really anything to new. If you do a search on the net you should be able to find Kazza Lite which is a hacked version of the software without the spyware. There was a thread here on it not too long ago.

It not the spyware this is referencing.......this is a part of the software that is part of Kazaa. If the "Kazaa Lite" stops that Stealth software from even being on your system, than all the better.

Well that is good to hear since that is what I have now. I did like morpheus quite a bit though.

Zyph,

You beat me to posting this, I just read the article on it. This is pretty big in my opinion. They have bundled this software with KAZA and plan to "turn it on" with each users permission, yeah right, I believe them.

Here is the scary thing:

"That technology can connect to other peer-to-peer networks, ad servers or file servers independently of the Kazaa software and can be automatically updated to add new features, according to Brilliant's filing."

So basically you are giving them free computer processing for their own uses, they don't tell you what it's going for. I'm sure in the future they will upgrade your software and not "bother" you by telling you what they are doing. The thing of it is, this is not for sharing music or for your benefit at all, it's all for the company to make a profit. If you are not using Kaza Light you are letting this company visit your computer and basically do as they wish, Not smart at all. How many non-literate users are going to "allow" this crap to run and allow this computer program and company free and unfettered access to their machines? Pretty scary to me.

my question is weither or not the "Kazaa Lite" stops this part of the software or if it just takes out the spyware. (This doesn't even look like it's related to the spyware at all.)

Zyph,

That's a good question, I agree with you in that this program does seem to be somewhat more seperate from the Kaza software than say the Bonzai Buddy install. It might not be out of the Kaza light, all the more reason to go elsewhere for your file sharing needs, morpheus etc. The thing that gets me is how many users are going to be running this without thinking about it? How many times have you gone to a friends/family members house and looked at there computer and they had 15 programs running, most of them preinstalled from whoever built the machine, others from crappy programs and adware etc. and they had no idea what most of them were nor how to turn them off if they wanted to? How many people like that are going to be the source of this companies revenue without knowing it? That's why I disklike these kind of setups/programs.
