What do you use for you browser's homepage?

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Just curious.

I stopped using any portal or homepage entirely a few years ago and started using John Dvorak's Portal idea.

I made my own homepage (updating links as needed) and I keep the file on the hard drive locally so there's no time wasted fetching the page off the Net. There's also minimal graphics on it so it loads quick.

It's got all my often used links. Easier to find things than in my Favorites (oh I still have a HUGE favorites folder, but this is for the often used links). I also have forms on the page that directly call up searches on my favorite search engines.

I also keep a copy on my web server so I can access my links from a client's computer (especially handy when searching for drivers).

Here's what it looks like:

Bob's Homepage

I used to use the Daily Bikini as my homepage... well, still visit it occasionally :)

Well, I used to do that, but it started getting annoying waiting for it to load everytime I opened a new IE window. Then I also had the issue that everytime I clicked a link, It opened in the OTHER IE window. So after awhile it got really annoying and I went back to using a blank page (about:blank). I now just use the important links in my toolbar and anything REALLY important, I leave on my desktop.

Oh I agree, that's why mine's almost entirely text. Loading off the hard drive it loads instantly.

Well, I have to admit that I tend to use my ISPs homepage, in this case it's RRs for this city. I like it because it's actually done fairly well, changes daily, has many good links to news (all news) and other local events and it's always functional (I can't say that for most other webpages). In this area, RRs a class act IMHO. Everything else I visit's in my favorites list and to me, that's not a problem.

I just use a blank page too. I started making my own portal a couple of years ago, just never got around to finishing it. :o Maybe I'll get back to that project sometime.
