Ancestral Quest
Family Tree Viewer
My grandfather used those programs to do research, or more of keeping track of research.

I too have occasionally looked into a few of the trial software versions that claim to be able to do this as one grows up hearing stories, rumors but never really knows for sure and it'd be cool stuff to know before you die someday, at least I think so.
Everytime I've tryed any software to do a simple search of relatives from either side of my parents families who've lived in the last 30 or so years (or less), it comes up with nothing. I'd have to conclude that if it can't even do that, it'd never do me any good for info before those people.
Sure, software's the easy way and would be great if it somehow magically worked but so far the only known good way is to manually search records the hard way and most of us don't have that much spare time. Maybe when we retire if the desire's still there and we can still hobble about

looking more for a program that lets you record infor rather than search for it - we have a lot of stuff, want to be able to arrange it, etc.

The latest version of Family Tree Maker seems to be quite good. My wife has been researching her family for quite some time and has been using that program.
And inf you need any info from the Jacksonville Florida Library in the geneology department, say hello to my mother. She is the research librarian for that department!
