I think I paid around $600 for my wifes engagement ring. And another $100 or so on the wedding band. The engagement ring is a round cut I do believe, 1/3 carat diamon with gold band(got it at Zales Diamond store, diamond looks to be real high quality, but I'm not an expert on it either). The wedding ring is just a standard gold band. I personally don't think you have to spend a fortune(even if you have the money to spend) just to "prove" your love for her. My now mother-in-law was giving me shit because I didn't spend as much as she thought I should on the rings. I told her to shut her fat yap unless she wanted to plop down the money for the rings herself. She did(shut her yap that is). ;) But then again she and my father-in-law paid for the wedding too... I never saw the bills but I'm sure it was in the neighborhood of $12,000-$17,000 for everything. That was nice of them. :D

I'd say spend what you can, but not too much. Personally if I had the $2k+ to spend, I'd spend half that and use the rest towards the honeymoon or something else nice for her.
"Why build only one when you can build two for twice the price?"

Uh, are you sure you want platinum? I mean, the diamond is the most important part, right? I say go with white gold and save yourself a few hundred dollars or so. It will look nearly the same, and you can spend that extra money on a honeymoon, bills, or something more practical. Heck, you could keep your laptop. :)

My mom's engagement ring is white gold, and it looks like silver that never tarnishes. It is much cheaper than platinum, but somewhat harder to find (as platinum is more popular).

My wife after begging to get married (I'm thinking WHY?) gave me paper an pencil and told me to draw a wedding ring that I could live with for the rest of my life.. and she did the same. After some penciling we compared. They matched! Simple bands with 3 small diamonds at 45 degrees. I amost pooped! (We still have the drawings) Unbelievible!
She shopped for three weeks and found a perfect set. When it was time to purchase them she made me go with. (somthing about sizing and stuff) heh. She had pretty nice bank account back then but the ones shes fould that matched our scribblings were ony $500 (she had 10 thou to spend!) The spendier ones got fugly!
$500 dollars later and 80 bucks for a good christian pastor/witnesess to come to our humble one bedoom apt we were married! Been two years and going stong. :) The extra $9000 went to the kids when they needed help. Now we can just say were broke... sorry!

Pidge.. You seem like the type that's gonna do what your gonna do. But why not spend that money on a set like Wraith said? Thats somthing to think about.. You asked for opions and I think its too much. Youve sold one comp and looking to sell the lappy? And as for the sister thing I'm not even going to go there..Ouch!!

Good luck man :)

BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!! :lol :] Geez, that's hillarious. I can't even SEE me telling MY future mother-in-law that, much less anyone else, Mike! HHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Hillarious....

Well, my girlfriend has been very good to me and so I honestly want to buy her a ring which she can be proud of. Her sister is much more materialistic than her. Actually, my girlfriend is not materialistic. Her sister is very materialistic. I work in the tech industry. If my stock options work out for me, then I don't have to worry to much but right now, I am trying to save up for our wedding also and I am assuming that I am gonna get zilch with my stock options although right now it looks pretty good. I'll see how it goes. My main concern now is that it looks good, and my next concern will be price. Thanks for the advice guys.
