We tried to get my mother in law on the web with an Ipad last year. My wife and her sister got her all set up on FB so she could see family pics, etc. She just found it too confusing when she got on the web proper.
My dad retired 25 years ago, and I nagged him relentlessly until he got a computer. There are studies out there which say learning new stuff (computers) and keeping the brain active are good for retaining mental acuity. He still doesn't really understand the tech, but he plays bridge online almost every day, wore out the first Kindle I got him (they sent him a new Kindle Fire for free). He's 93. My mom didn't want anything to do with them.
A good collection of IT quips
omgoodness,,, FB would be like another planet for my mom,,!
she knows how to turn on the computer and monitor, and then click on the Gmail shortcut on her desktop.
when she's done with Gmail, she "X"-es out ( no logging off Gmail for her! ), and shuts down the PC & monitor.
Period. Done. Final.
