so much wrong about this -sick story

Post by renovation »

A baby girl just three days old was mauled to death by a dog as she sat in a baby swing at her family's Ohio home.

Makayla Darnell was attacked by the family pet, identified by the Toledo Blade as a four or five-year-old pit bull, as she sat in the living room of the Beaverdam home.

Her parents -- Audrianna Myers and Jared Darnell -- who were in the kitchen said they did not hear a sound from either the baby or the dog until after Thursday evening's attack. They rushed Makayla to the hospital, but she could not be saved.

"It all appeared to happen in a matter of seconds," an investigator said.

The dog has been seized and an autopsy was being carried out on Makayla.

I have 2 dobermans and I trust them alone with my daughter, who is almost 4. We had 1 Doberman when she was born. At that time (when she was 3 days old) she was not left alone with the dog (or alone at all). It takes time for the dog to get to know the baby and that time must be supervised. It would be the same thing to leave the dog with a brand new pup. The time needs to be supervised. The dog probably felt threatened by the babies presence and saw it as defending its place in the family.

Shame on the parents for this moreso than the dog. Of course I am sure that the guilt they feel is unbearable.

Has nothing to do with the breed od dog it has everything to do with parenting and good pet ownership. I have three kids and two red nose pits that sleep with them. God help the intruder that tries to harm my children with those dogs anywhere around.

Completely agree.

Some dogs (not really breed specific) have a general distrust for strangers. At 3 days old, this baby was still a stranger to the dog. Unfortunately the dog will probably be put down due to the negligence of the parents.

I know of some nice pits - but even a toy poodle I wouldn't leave alone with a 3 day old baby . as far as this go's even a cat can't be trusted around a new baby .

Yeah, you have to watch any dog with a child for the first while till it accepts it.

I have to agree and disagree with you on this one. Yes it has everything to do with ownership and good parenting. But by nature the Pit is an aggressive bread. That is why it is a breed, it was bread to be a fighting dog. Yes some can be nice but as a breed no.

Blue healer = smart
Lab = Loyal
collie = herding dog

The list goes on. Pits by design are aggressive killers.

I have a friend who has a pit and she is a great dog, well behaved but I would not put a child in the same room alone with that dog.

But above all this: REALLY someone would put a 3 day old in a swing and leave it alone????!??!?!?!?!??!!??!?! That is just F'ing wrong

All dogs are aggressive when they feel a strange presence in their "domain", but I agree, some can do far more damage than others. Had it been a tiny dog, the child may have lived.

any/all dogs can attack...they are animals, afterall. the difference is how deadly they are. to an infant, sure, most will be possible killers. pits and similar are different, as they literally rip your throat apart and hang on until you are dead. other dogs don't do that, AFAIK. a lab or retriever may bite you, but have you ever heard of those breeds having to be pulled off of someone's face/neck by multiple people?

Some dogs are bred as fighters, some are bred to be swimmers, some are bred to bird hunt. Its in their blood and no amount of training or being nice to them will get it out of them, its plain ole instinct.

Now WTF is a Chihuahua bred for?
