Sci Fi Channel Aims to Shed Geeky Image With New Name: "Syfy"

In some universe, the name “Syfy” is less geeky than the name “Sci Fi.” Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel, is betting it’s this one.

To that end, the 16-year-old network—owned by NBC Universal—plans to announce that Syfy is its new name March 16 at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York...

...“When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you’d text it,” Mr. Howe said. “It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.”

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! At first I thought this was an Onion article but it's for real.

Seems more like a "typo" than anything else. I bet half the people there don't know how to spell "Sci Fi" and kept spelling it "Syfy"

On [H] or where ever i came across this they mentioned with hulu and other digital distribution the Sci-Fi kinda gets lots in the sub-category with the same name. Atleast in those situations it makes sense to rebrand in a market where your brand would otherwise disappers.

The Sci-fi channel has given Sci-fi a bad name. So the change IMO is a good thing. I live for Sci-fi & can't stand to watch that channel.
