XP never phones home, except when you perform the initial activation. While Microsoft's OFFICIAL policy is 1 license - 1 computer, so far people have reported no problems installing XP on two or even 3 systems. Unofficially MS realizes that people want to install it on their workstation AND lappy an...

Restore points are pretty good BUT it's not as effective as making a Ghost image. There's a lot of things a system restore won't fix. Keep in mind that a Restore Point is NOT an image. It tracks changes to files and registry entries and backs up only certain information. In general restore points ar...

HONZ: It's not MS Messenger, it's the Messenger Service. It's used by administrators to notify network users of important messages - like the server is going down for maintenance, etc. Also when using a printer shared on a server, the messenger service notifies you of printer errors like out of pape...

First of all is this the same power supply as was used on the old mobo? Anything that caused smoke is almost certainly a short circuit and that couldn't have done the power supply any good. You got a spare you can try? Have you tried reseting the CMOS? Assuming the PSU is good if the fans spin up th...

It does vary by units. Some of the newer electronic ones will only supply power during a switchover, but if you turn it on with no AC voltage available it won't work until it's reset. Haven't seen to many of those lately, but it's annoying when you run across one. That's why I like my old beastie-bo...

Onboard NIC, sound & video. Not bad for a cheap build for the wife, kids or grandma:

Actually it can affect Win98 if WinPopup is installed (allows Win9x to receive network messages), although I'm pretty sure it's not installed in Win98 by default. The only reason this A-hole is getting away with this is because WinXP has the Messenger Service enabled by default, which in WinXP Home ...

This a WinXP system? Have you EVER run the Repair option after booting from the XP CD, or just swapped the mobo and let it figure it out for itself? Before wiping the drive I'd try the repair option first. Might fix it. You'll probably need to re-install the Service Pack afterwards though - pretty s...

The FIRST thing you should do when having a problem like this is set your CPU and video clocks to normal. You're just chasing your tail if you don't eliminate that possibility first-off. This is EXACTLY the stability problems you get when overclocking. If that fixes it but you still want to overcloc...

They've obviously gotten to him. Realizing that they couldn't eliminate him without creating suspicion, they lobotomized him and then had him post that misleading statement, meanwhile monitoring access to the website to track down other potential threats. DON'T BELIEVE THAT LETTER! It's obviously fa...
