Re: Mounting/Unmounting a local drive for "cold" backups
The free Veeam Backup & Recovery Community Edition is fantastic for a full featured backup solution. The CE gives you full featured scheduled backups (full + incremental, synthetic backups, etc) and multiple physical and/or virtual systems with the free license. Check it out if you haven't. I us...

Re: VPN recommendations
I use my Edgerouter X for VPN. It's a basic L2TP IPSec VPN. My home upload is only 20Mbps, so performance isn't awesome, but it gets the job done for browsing and checking the home security cams while traveling.

Anyone watching this? I didn't make it through the first episode...just didn't care for the style, but may give it another try.

I use the free ScreenConnect (now ConnectWise Control) license that allows 1 concurrent connection and three remote agents. Works great.

Re: Cloud storage recommendations
Did you end up finding anything? I'd be surprised if you find an unlimited service that allows NAS backups...haven't seen that before. You can get unlimited for desktops all day long, but I'm not aware of any unlimited on the NAS side. If there are, businesses would be loading up on that and the pro...

Re: There’s a Heartwarming Story Behind This New Star Trek: Picard Poster
i haven't dug into what the storyline is exactly, but from what i've seen, it's going to be decent. bringing back 7of9 and some kind of Borg conspiracy (maybe Starfleet trying to use Borg tech and it going wrong) is pretty cool.

looks good to me...he even said the movie is basically an homage to aviation above all else. i'm surprised Cruise didn't insist on piloting everything in real time as well...hahaha

Notepad + + has been a go-to for as long as I can remember for work use. It handles large log files without an issue and makes parsing things a lot easier.

Thanks for the heads up. One correction, you need to sign in to your Google Calendar, then Settings > Event Settings. I was looking for it in Gmail, but it wasn't there.

Re: Florida city fires IT employee after paying ransom demand last week
I'm hoping that tech was involved enough in the past to have his/her recommendations disregarded by management, while keeping CYA records. The lawsuit would be glorious! +1 FP...a failure at this level isn't because a lowly tech failed to click a box somewhere, it's up to management to determine the...

So...finally got into the outside box. Not sure of the exact name, but the lock requires a "star key slam tool" or whatever it's called. This type of tool is used: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71rsHEM4gkL._SL1500_.jpg https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UFIH956 I picke...

Re: Coax install question
i'll look at it closer...looks like a termination lock, but you are probably right. if i can get it open, i'll swap the connections, if possible. i wish i could get rid of the thing...after looking at the power adapter, the tech split it open to get inside and add the power wires, then soldered the ...

Re: Coax install question
great info, thank you. I checked the current signal levels and with the power inserter connected, it's: downstream: s/n 37-38dB, power level 4 dBmV upstream: 34-35 dBmV i'll try again when i can unplug the power. i did find that what i thought was a splitter is the power inserter...a 3-way power-in/...
