Maybe you have a HD running in UDMA 100 mode. Win2000 doesn't support that yet. Check if your HD is running in PIO mode. If so you have to put your HD in UDMA 66 mode. Your HD will run in UDMA 33 then. If you want UDMA 66 you have to enable it with a registry setting.

Is the laptops NIC slower than the other PCs (like a 10 vs 10/100 card)?
If one is a 10Mbit/s and the other is a 100Mbit/s card they'll communicate at 10Mbit/s.

Only way to force Win2K not to is to disable ACPI Power Management in the BIOS menu
That's not the only way.
