I didn't say it was necessary, but have seen it work when no other setting would. DVD-Roms and some burners seem to be picky about other hardware they reside with.

DirkBelig, I've read posts where some have gotten notes in with their board telling them to use cd/dvd on ide 1 and hd's on ide 2 for best results. Some have said this fixed problems for them.
