Looking for information on Windows Longhorn and Macs

Does anyone know when Windows Longhorn will be released and what is going to be included in it? In a few years time I am planning to perhaps get a new computer and am considering whether I should stay with Windows or get an Apple Mac. Have any of you had a Windows computer and also used a Mac? If yo...

Running Windows 2000 - Do I need Windows XP?

When I bought Windows 2000 I was told that it was the future, and then Windows XP replaced it. Perhaps someone who moved from Windows 2000 to Windows XP could tell me if I would get any benefits by using Windows XP. Would you say that seeing as I am using Windows 2000 Professional that I should use ...

Disk Space

I have floppy disks which say 1.44MB on them, yet Windows shows that the capacity is 1.38MB.
My hard disk is supposed to be 40GB yet there is 38.1GB available. Why is there not the space there is supposed to be?

Ever lost data through not backing up?

I have to admit that at the moment I do not have a backup strategy. My computer is just over a year old and I have not had a serious problem with it. Perhaps you have lost data and wished you had done backups. Convince me that I should do it.

How do I partition my hard drive?

I am running Windows 2000 Professional, and have one C: drive, with approximately 40GB of space. It uses NTFS. I am considering partitioning the drive to have seperate "drives" for different things which I use the computer for. What are the pros and cons of partitioning? How do I do it? Ho...

Which files can I delete?

Are there any files on my computer which I can safely delete to save disk space? I have a lot of .tmp files. What are these files, why are they created and can I delete them? I also have files with names such as ~$ument.doc What are these? Is there any way a computer can tell you which files can be ...

What should I do about this?

Saw this on the Microsoft website: SUMMARY There is a virus hoax that advises customers to delete a valid Windows file that is named Jdbgmgr.exe. This file is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. If you receive the e-mail message that is listed in the "More Information" section of th...

Speed of Windows 2000

I am running Windows 2000 Professional on a 1GHz Pentium III processor, with 128MB RAM. Sometimes it is slow - windows take a long time to open, and it takes a long time to respond. Is there anything I can do to make it run faster?

Shutting Down Computers

Not sure if this has been answered before, but is it best to shut down computers when not in use, or leave them running? It would be useful if someone could answer this or provide a link to a thread on it.

Software on Windows 2000

While logged on as a power user, I installed a piece of software on Windows 2000 Professional. However, when I log on as administrator or another user it isn't there. I then installed it while logged on as administrator, and now I have to log on as administrator in order to use it. How can I install...
