Those temps are a bit high, but then gigabyte sensors are not too accurate. Well within range of amd specs anyway. At least it is working.

All sorted, had to remove the fan to bend the center of the long bar holding the clips. And now it does what it says on the tin! 42 with case open 46-48 with case closed.

Is the thumb clip resting on your ram?

If not, then it sounds like you may have a defective clip. It should be a tight fit. You can try bending the clip (with it not installed of course) and see if that helps. Or ask for a replacement.

using xp2100 on gigabyte GA-7VAXP and 1gig of pc2700

I am using a thin layer of Arctic silver, all catches are ok old heat sink just used one catch, and using fan on high setting. the clips just look a little low.

What mobo/cpu?


If it's not letting you boot, that sounds like it isn't on securely. Be sure all the clips are fully on the rear and front mobo catches. Not just on the edge. Are any of the catches missing or damaged?

You using a thin/even layer of thermal compound on the raised cpu?

I got problems with mine can anyone help?

Not sure if it is tight enough sitting on the cpu as the temp goes up at a steady rate into the 70s!!! The pc will only boot when it is lay flat if I stand the tower up right pc turns off after a few seconds. any idea's, should I try bending the clips to pull down more on the cpu???

Alrighty. Found out my mobo, it is KT7 Turbo2 (I knew I knew it somewhere).

That all makes sense. I have been keeping the side panel off during all this debugging. The case cooling issue is something new to me. Just have the one stock (intake?) fan as far as I know. Maybe I'll do something about that, but I ran another encode last night under the same conditions, no glitches, so if the 50c temp sounds ok to you and the thing doesn't appear prone to lockups now, then I can relax about it. Thanks for the input!

That is the main culprit. If the room temp is hot then all you are doing is recirculating hot air. You can try running with the side panel off and that might help some, but the biggest thing that will help you is winter. Speaking of, how is your case cooling? You should have at least one intake and one exhaust fan.

With a hot room, 50c sounds reasonable.

Too much compound on the cpu prohibits heat transfer. See here for instruction on the best way to apply it. That may help some too.

The temp sensor I use is the thermaltake hardcano II. Try searching on google for it. Can't remember where i got it. That is one of the few that has a thin enough sensor for proper placement. However, it has to be done correctly or your system may not boot. It is tricky because if not in the best place, it prevents the cpu pins from making contact.


Mobo sensors can go either way, even on the same make. They are that inconsistant.

Thanks for the quick reply man. Here we go:

mobo - I wish I could remember exactly. Some variety of KTX (or KTV?).. damn. Something fast, sorry.
cpu - Athlon/Duron 1.1ghz
room temp - a bit warm, around 80 or so in the summer ( I don't keep it air conditioned)
previous cpu temps - up around 130-140far, using the stock $10 cpu fan....

RE: thermal grease, the shop I bought it from installed it before, I put it on myself installing the Aero. Don't think I got too much, just a dab right on the little center square. BTW, why would too much grease cause a problem?

Also, where do you get the temp sensor you mentioned to go on the bottom of the cpu?

And are the mobo sensors usually erring on the high side? That would be good. I'll see how it all goes with the video encoding, if it's nice and stable time after time, then I'll know I'm home. They told me that heat could indeed be a factor, and I've seen for myself on an old Celeron that the system locked up when the fan started going out. Cheers,

Could be a lot of variables. What mobo/cpu and how is your case and room temp? If your room/case is high then so will be your cpu.

Also, what was your temp before and what hsf were you using? Good thermal compound applied thin and evenly on the cpu? I've found sometimes if I get high temps and reinstall the cpu, my temps usually are lowered. Too much or too little compound will have an effect.

Another thing to consider is if you are going by temps reported from your mobo sensors, they are rarely 100% accurate. Only way to be sure is by placing a thin temp sensor on the bottom of the cpu.

Bottom line is if everything is stable, no real need to worry about it since AMD cpus are rated up to I believe 75C. Though I've never reached nearly that high.

Just searching for some other input on the Aero 7+ fan. Just bought one, as I was advised to get a stiffer fan having had lots of trouble recently with lockups while doing video encoding. I read up on this fan and others (reviews, etc) before buying one, and this one had good marks. I saw your temperatures in the review, and they corresponded with temps on the other reviews I'd read (all less than 45c), but I swear I got that thing on there and after a 5 hour load it was riding up there at 50c/120f, steady. None of the temps I'd seen in any reviews had got this high. I was happy to say the encoding cycle didn't lockup on me (a good sign, though I want to see it happen a few times in a row), but why the high temps? This is just yer basic AMD/Athlon machine, no overclocking or anything special. Any idears? thanx....

At first I didn't like it because I compared it against an sk7 using a 45cfm fan. I failed to consider that the Aero 7+ fan puts out just 20cfm on the highest speed. That fan design, it works!
